Dean started his investigative career with HMRC in 1990 before joining Lancashire Police in 1994. Worked in a variety of investigative roles across Lancashire and nationally in the ranks of DC to DCI including CID, Counter Terrorism, National Crime Squad, Intelligence, Surveillance, Public Protection, Regional Organised Crime Unit and the Force Major Investigation Team as an accredited PIP 3 SIO.
Led on many major, high profile, serious and complex investigations and operations including international collaborations and joint investigation teams. Joined Cumbria Constabulary in 2017 as Detective Superintendent, Director of Intelligence and Force Authorising Officer.
Subsequently promoted to Detective Chief Superintendent, Head of Crime in Cumbria and became a member of the National Homicide Working Group and Deputy Chair of the National PIP 4 Group.
After retiring in 2022, worked with the Information Commissioner’s Office as Head of Investigations before taking up a further policing role on a two year contract as Detective Superintendent, Head of Crime in the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force between 2023 - 2025, leading all serious crime investigations, developing specialist capabilities and capacity and operating as a Firearms Commander and firearms officer.
